Statistically speaking, corn is most produced grain in the whole world and with approximately 80 million acres on U.S. soil. Nowadays, people consume it more and more on a daily basis, however, this is not a healthy grain, as thought by most.

Why Is Corn Bad for Us?

This grain has the worst omega-6 to omega-3 ratio of all grains. Omega-6 outnumbers the omega-3 and this impedes the body’s capacity to control the inflammatory response. This inflammation can trigger serious health issues like cancer, diabetes, high levels of bad cholesterol, asthma, depression, and heart problems.

What’s more, in today’s world, due to the abundance of processed foods found in stores, it has become nearly impossible to control our consumption of corn. In fact, corn is turned into high fructose corn syrup is present in ketchups, salad dressings, soda drinks, chips, and cookies. This artificial sweetener has been associated with serious health issues, from diabetes to obesity.

6 Reasons Why You Need to Avoid Corn

It is not a veggie

This grain is sugary and starchy and it was domesticated and cultivated more than 6000 years ago in central Mexico from a plant called teosinte. Corn was the first GMO and it continued to be reengineered in different ways.

It elevates the chance of autoimmune illnesses

Though it is free of gluten, it can irritate the gut lining because the body thinks that the corn proteins are gluten which can damage the immunity. It also has a high GI and it easily turns to sugar in the body. This can cause inflammation and insulin response.

It is indigestible

Did you know that we cannot completely digest corn due to the high level of cellulose, a fiber? Our digestive system is unable to break down this fiber entirely due to lack of some necessary enzymes. This is why people often feel full after eating corn. Moreover, like any other grain, corn has prolamins, a class of proteins which the body has a problem breaking down and this increases the chance of health problems like leaky gut.

It is full of pesticides

Nowadays, the corn sold is not organic and it is filled with all kinds of insecticides and other toxic chemicals. According to a study from 2011, the Bt toxin accumulates in the human blood and here it impede the normal functioning of the organs and lead to long-term health consequences.

85 percent of corn is GMO

In the U.S., 85 percent of corn is genetically modified and a study published in the International Journal of Biological Sciences analyzed the effects of GMO on rats and it was found that it can cause significant organ damage.

It has lectins

In normal situations, we digest proteins into amino acids and they are absorbed through the small intestine wall and the body uses them to build cellular structures and components. But, lectins are proteins that we cannot digest and they go through the gut wall as complete and indigested and this can damage the gut and trigger inflammation.
